UConn Football opened its 2019 season on Thursday night, and thanks to our generous donors, we were able to distribute 147 tickets – our biggest distribution to date! Children and chaperones from New Britain Police Athletic League and Our Piece of the Pie to watch the Huskies beat the Wagner Football Hurley’s 24-21.
Over the summer, we were connected with current Dallas Cowboy and forever UConn legend Byron Jones, who told us about the work he was doing with the New Britain Police Athletic League. The New Britain PAL is a non-profit youth is to enable young people to benefit from participation in team sports and activities in a safe and structured environment. Bused in and sporting their sleek uniforms, children from the PAL Raiders Football team came out to cheer on the Huskies – including chaperone and hero from our win over Notre Dame, Andre Dixon!
Our Piece of the Pie also took in the game alongside the huge turnout. “The kids had a blast and for many it was their first UConn Football game!” said Craig Mergins, Founder and Director of Our Piece of the Pie. They will be taking 20 children to each game this season and we hope many more will get to enjoy a football game for the first time.
